Xerox is currently previewing a new production technology—one they say will unite proponents of inkjet with fans on toner technology. According to their reports, this production inkjet technology can produce more than 2,000 full color images every minute. It’s a high speed, high quality printing job that can only be accomplished by their 56 print heads. Combined, these print heads use more than 49,000 nozzles to deliver approximately two billion ink droplets per second. In addition to the amazing speed and quality this new technology promises to deliver inkjet printed pages that can be easily erased and recycled.
New Ink Formula
That is no small claim since most inkjet printed pages are practically impossible to de ink. Scientists that have studied the issue say that this is due to the structure of ink and paper. During the inkjet process, the ink is soaked into the paper’s fibers and becomes notoriously difficult to remove. Previously the only options for combating the issue have been specially coated and expensive papers. Xerox’s new technology includes a resin-based ink that does not soak through—thus solving the problem no matter what type of paper is used.
Powerful Printer Heads
Of course, the real stars of the show are the amazing print heads—each with approximately 880 microscopic nozzles. When you put them together, you wind up with an image that prints a high speed 600 dpi image easily. To prevent print errors from forming, the device is fitted with a sensor that can scan the drops as they are laid down. It determines that each of nearly two billion drops of ink hits the page exactly where it is supposed to. The quality or type of paper simply doesn’t affect the issue at all. Xerox’s excitement over the unveiling and demonstration of this new digital print production technology is completely understandable.
